Q: Violins are small compared to some instruments. What is their role in an ensemble?
MH: In the orchestra, the violin is one of the most crucial instruments. The violin sections sit on the left side of the conductor, and together they can produce very large, magnificent sounds. Not only must you play beautifully, but you must also let other players shine through when It's their turn. I usually have students prepare for this experience by playing duets with them and making sure their rhythmic skills are in place.
